MANILA, Philippines – April 14, 2026 — Roblox Corporation has announced a major update aimed at improving safety for younger users with the launch of age-based accounts and expanded parental controls. Rolling out in early June 2026, the new system introduces Roblox Kids (ages 5–8) and Roblox Select (ages 9–15), designed to provide more age-appropriate content, communication settings, and gaming experiences.
This update builds on Roblox’s earlier rollout of facial age verification, making it the first major gaming platform to require age checks for chat access. So far, over 50% of global users—and 65% in the U.S.—have completed age verification, highlighting the platform’s push toward safer, more personalized experiences.
New Age-Based Accounts for Safer Gameplay
The new account system automatically assigns users based on their verified age:
- Roblox Kids (Ages 5–8):
Designed for younger players, these accounts only allow access to games with Minimal or Mild content ratings. Communication features are disabled by default, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment. A distinct interface design also helps identify Kids accounts across the platform. - Roblox Select (Ages 9–15):
These accounts expand access to include games with up to Moderate content ratings, while maintaining existing communication settings. Like Kids accounts, they feature a unique visual design to distinguish account types.
As users grow, their accounts will automatically update—transitioning from Kids to Select at age 9, and to standard Roblox accounts at age 16.

Smarter Game Selection and Content Moderation
Roblox is also introducing a continuous evaluation system to ensure games remain appropriate for younger audiences. This includes:
- Developer verification (ID checks, two-factor authentication, and active subscriptions)
- Real-time monitoring of gameplay behavior and user reports
- Content rating labels (Minimal, Mild, Moderate)
- Default restrictions on sensitive or high-risk content
Even before this update, Roblox already used AI moderation tools and real-time monitoring to detect policy violations. These new layers further strengthen content safety for users under 16.
Expanded Parental Controls for More Flexibility
Parents will now have greater control and visibility over their children’s activity on Roblox. New and extended features include:
- Ability to block specific games until age 15
- Continued access to chat management controls
- A new game approval feature, allowing parents to grant access to restricted titles
- Tools to monitor screen time, spending, friends list, and gameplay activity
These updates aim to give parents more precise control while allowing kids to safely explore and enjoy the platform.
Global Rating System Coming Soon
Later in 2026, Roblox plans to integrate the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework. This globally recognized system will provide clearer, region-specific ratings—such as ESRB and PEGI—making it easier for families to identify age-appropriate content.
A Step Toward Safer Online Experiences

According to Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman, the update represents a major shift in how users discover and interact with games. By combining age verification, smarter content filtering, and stronger parental tools, Roblox aims to create a safer and more engaging environment for younger players.
Industry experts have also praised the move. ConnectSafely CEO Larry Magid noted that Roblox is helping set a higher standard for online platforms by prioritizing both safety and positive user experiences.
