My Quarantine Companions: The Huawei Freebuds 4 and Huawei Watch 3

HUAWEI WATCH 3 & FREEBUDS 4

A few of my friends already know what happened to me and my family a few weeks back. And to those who’ve, I missed telling, I along with the whole family (as well as our neighbor) have been tested positive for Covid and have been quarantined for about 10 days. It’s funny that it happened to me a few days after my first dose of the vaccine. That is why I was a bit hesitant to do a swab test when the plague started spreading in our house.

Luckily and Thank God, not even one of us became critical during that time. And I myself was still able to work even I was staying in a small tent inside a school here in Valenzuela. It was a terrifying experience and a an eyeopener for us to really keep our immune system strong and healthy.

But honestly speaking, this blog post is not really going to be all about that previous story. What I really wanted to tell you is how I was able to withstand the long hours and efficiently used the time to still work, finished backlogs, and entertain myself through the help of these two wearables; the Huawei Freebuds 4 and Huawei Watch 3

Let’s start with the Huawei Watch 3.

HUAWEI WATCH 3

Huawei Watch 3 was released here in the Philippines last June 2021. It got an ultra-long battery life, an E-Sim Technology, as well as an all-around professional, sports, and health management.

At first look, I was really amazed at how beautiful this watch is that after a few days of trying, I decided to let go of my other smartwatches. In terms of design, I can definitely say that the Huawei Watch 3 is one of the best-looking minimalist smartwatches that you can buy to date.  It is made from stainless steel and a ceramic back case featuring a high-quality, luxurious finish. It does look like that top of the line. Though at 65grams, It felt a bit heavy to wear compared to my previous smartwatches though almost the same feeling whenever I’m wearing a steel watch.

This watch is a full-touch screen with two buttons on the side. The AMOLED screen is so clear that even the icons are really small, it is still readable. It is so sharp I enjoyed switching watch faces constantly. The 2.5D curve around the bezel also makes swiping really easy.

To navigate you can simply swipe left from the home screen you’ll get to see the most recent apps you used. Swiping down you can access the control panel while swiping up will give you notifications coming from the connected phone. On the other hand, swiping right can access different information that includes activity records, heart rate, SPO2, and skin temperature.

Clicking the upper button brings you the main menu, a collection of apps in large icons. You can zoom it in and zoom out by turning it around or directly pinching the screen. You can add more apps depending on your need. Recently, Huawei made a partnership with Wish 107.5 making the app available to download straight to your smartwatch. This is amazing news at least now we can all enjoy good music straight to our watches.

Pressing the lower button will take you to a list of workouts. There are 100 workout modes available like the usual running, hiking, swimming, or even snowboarding.

During my stay at the facility, the smartwatch was a big help when performing exercises inside our station. Unfortunately, it is prohibited for us to take photos of the area hence I wouldn’t be able to show you snippets of the things I did inside the facility.

Another smartwatch feature that I was able to maximize was the SPO2 monitoring. SPO2 measures the blood oxygen which nurses are monitoring daily at the facility. A normal reading is typically between 95 and 100 percent, if it falls down you would need to take some precautions.

Sleep can also be monitored through the smartwatch. And because rest is really important if you are sick, getting proper sleep is needed. Through the Huawei Health app, I was able to check detailed information about the different apps installed in the watch.

Huawei also develop a way for us to be connected even without our actual smartphones through the E-Sim service. With this, you can make phone calls directly from the smartwatch especially if you already drained your phone’s battery. Though activating this service can make the battery of your smartwatch drain faster.

As to how Huawei estimates it, if your Huawei watch is connected to your phone it can last for up to 3 days while 14 days when the special battery mode is activated. But of course, it would still depend on how you will use the unit. When I was on quarantine, I decided to tick the special battery mode because I don’t really have a lot of activities to do during the day.

I general, I can say that I’m really happy with this smartwatch. Its polished and classy design makes it appropriate to wear on different occasions. Just like other smartwatches, there are also tons of watch faces to download depending on your mood. Though moving around and customizing would take time before you can get used to it. Also charging the unit is a bit slower than usual you would really need to consider the time you will need to use it.

HUAWEI FREEBUDS 4

The Huawei Freebuds 4 is the newest premium TWS Buds that bring ANC to an open-fit design, better battery life, and Bluetooth 5.2. Along with Huawei watch 3, the Freebuds 4 has been my companion while I was in quarantine. And because I’ve used its predecessor, the Huawei Freebuds 3, I expect better performance and battery life with the Freebuds 4.

Honestly speaking, Huawei Freebuds 3 and 4 are almost identical that if you place them side by side, you’ll probably be confused and might interchange them. The Freebuds 4 uses an open fit design which means the earbuds are just hanging instead of being fully inside the ear canal. Some other people have problems with this kind of earbuds but I personally am okay with it. Actually, I find it fittingly okay to my ear even I am working out or doing a more strenuous activity sometimes I forgot I’m wearing it. This is because it was designed with an air-like built for enhanced wearer comfort. And giving us better sounding quality and clearness, they also add up the Active Noise Cancelation or ANC 2.0 which you can activate by simply doing a long press at the buds. Swipe up or down to turn the volume and tap twice to pause, answer or end a call.

Pairing the Freebuds 4 to my devices both iOS and android was easy. I even connected it to my laptop and didn’t encounter any problem. It can be done by simply opening the case and pairing it via Bluetooth or by pressing the button on the side for about two seconds until the LED lights start blinking.

And because I got multiple devices, I can actively connect two units to my Freebuds at the same time. This actually eliminates the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting the device to my phone to the laptop and vice versa.

Another feature that I like with the Freebuds 4 is the high-sensitivity microphone. It is really important especially nowadays that most meetings are done virtually, having a wireless earphone would really suffice the need.

One of the things that really help me alleviate the boredom during the quarantine was through watching movies and playing games. And because the Huawei Freebuds 4 also supports low latency mode, it was truly efficient to use when playing games or watching movies. With only less than 90ms, you’ll really go to experience an immersive feeling due to the action and the sound are in sync.

Huawei Freebuds 4 battery life is pretty okay especially with the active noise cancelation turned off it can run for about 4 hours. With ANC on, it cuts the battery life to half. But no need to worry, because having the case with you can give you an additional 22 hours of use.

I have no doubt, Huawei Freebuds 4 and Huawei Watch 3 are two great wearables you should consider purchasing. It got that stylish and study look comparable to those smartwatches and earphones at a more expensive price. In terms of features and capabilities, it has more than what I need, I just wish that soon Huawei would include blood pressure measurement capabilities in their watches. All in all, I cannot say fully to instantly get these wearables, if you are still comfortable with what you are using, go ahead for I know during these tough times we really need to maximize how we will manage our money. But if you want to elevate and feel that ease in your life, then having these wearables can definitely uplift your lifestyle.
