Lola Sela Bungangera and my short stint at DZRH Gabi ng Lagim

Eloisa Cruz Canlas also known as “Lola Sela Bungangera”

Popularly known as “Lola Sela Bungangera“, Radio Drama pioneer Eloisa Cruz Canlas passed away on Sunday (July 15, 2012), after a lingering illness she sustained from a road accident on November 3, 2011. Her remains lie in state at the Holy Trinity Chapels and Crematorium, Sucat, Paranaque City. Cremation rites will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 10am.

Lola Sela jumpstarted her voice acting career on campus radio as a hobby and later tempered her unparalleled skill over at Manila Broadcasting Corporation’s DZRH for more than five decades. Her voice made its mark on almost all dramas that DZRH produced since the ’70s, and promo plugs for countless consumer products. One of her most popular role was Zimatar in the radio show “Adventures of Zimatar”.

Before her accident, she was presented the University of the Philippines Gawad Plaridel Award 2011 for her unique abilities and contribution to the broadcast industry.

I considered Lola Sela as one of my mentors in voice acting, I’ve work with her in a stint at ‘Good Morning Kuya‘ which airs in UNTV 37 as co-hosts in Pondahan ni Kuya Daniel.

She is very kind hearted and willingly teaches anybody who has interest in developing their skills in voice acting. I myself became one of her so-called students, she is very supportive and always giving me a boost of confidence.

In memory of her, I would like to share the activity we did for the program “Bread n’ Butter. It’s very memorable for me because it was the first time to try Radio Voice-acting along with the legends of Radio Drama in the Philippines. I did a part as “Nestor” in the long running radio drama “Gabi ng Lagim” which airs over DZRH. It was Lola Sela who took us in to  experience voice acting.

To our Lola Sela, you may be gone in this world, but your memories, good works and deeds will always be remembered.

By the way here is the link of our recorded lines, I acted as Nestor, Kitt as Inay, Arlene as Cecile, hope you will enjoy this one.

Aw, this was a very nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to create a superb article… but
what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and
never manage to get nearly anything done.

This post brought back many memories of my childhood, listening to DZRH’s radio dramas aired in our local radio station. And yes, I remember Eloisa Cruz Canlas as being named among the voice talents after the radio drama’s episode. Was she really the voice of Zimatar or of Zimatar’s mother, Eng-Eng? Those were the days, and those were happy simple days. Our family, after dinner, would be glued to the radio listening to the radio dramas as there was no television yet in town.
