Saltwater Float Center Manila: ‘I floated like I’m in Space’

Saltwater Therapy Center

I know you already heard so many stories about the Dead Sea and on why it is called so. Being one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water, the high salinity of it makes it a harsh environment for plants and animals to live, but could give lots of health benefits to human who floats on to it.

Even in the early times, people already know the benefits the Dead Sea could give, In fact the dead sea has been considered as one of the worlds first health resorts, and its salt has been used nowadays to create cosmetics and other herbal products.

And yes, the fact is true that anyone can easily float in the dead sea because of natural buoyancy, but bet you, even if you can float, the Dead Sea was still named as the second most dangerous place to swim in Israel.

This is due to accidents or just by mistakenly floating face down. A few swallows of the water in the Dead Sea can destroy the electrolyte balance in the body. Massive doses of salt can hurt the heart and the kidneys and could cause the body to shut down.

Anyway, I am not trying to discourage you of visiting the place, for I personally would love to visit and try it in the future. But what I would really like to introduce to all of you is this therapy I was able to try recently that basically resembles the idea of you floating on the Dead Sea, both therapeutic and relaxing.

Continue reading and will share to you my first hand experience.

Saltwater Float Center officially open its very first branch here in Ortigas Center. The owners of the center were too passionate to introduce this totally unique therapy here in the Philippines.

Floating is said to be an absolutely amazing way to relax, destress and connect with our inner self in our float pods – the pods – are essentially the perfect bath tubs for relaxation – are 8ft long and 5ft wide, air is allowed to freely flow in and out, and the lid never locks or latches. It holds about 12 inches of water, which is saturated with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. This creates a solution more buoyant than the Dead Sea, and you float on your back about half in and half out of the water. The water itself is kept at the average skin temperature (34° C), which allows you to lose track of your body. The tank is almost sound proof and, when you turn off the light and close the lid, completely dark.

The Saltwater Float Center Manila Experience

I just heard about this new place from a friend who has tried it as well. As she said, she did felt different and more relax right after the session. She even felt that all her bad toxins and negative energies were sucked out of her body. The whole concept made me a bit intrigue and my curiosity was triggered. Making me want to try it personally as well. Plus the fact that I could be able to float effortlessly in the water made me even more excited.

The center was located in Ortigas Center at the Sapphire Bloc. I decided to do a schedule right after my Obstacle Sports Factory training to make the relaxation even better. When I arrive, Ate Jane (the current staff) was already expecting me and immediately assisted me. A client went out just as soon as I came in making the two pods available for me and a friend (who weren’t able to join me on that session).

I was instructed to first sign a waiver. After signing, the staff already brought me to the first room, where a huge Egg looking pod is located. Actually the whole Saltwater Float Center is just a small area with a small lobby, two rooms with pods and an area located at the back that serves as the comfort room.

The pod room is a small room where this huge pod is located (I think the pod here is just right for the Asian size), a shower area and a basket with items like earplugs, drinkable water, towel, a foam that will serve as your pillow and a water spray that you can use if ever saltwater came in contact to your face. Before going in, it is advisable to take a bath first to cleanse your body and take off all the oils, lotions or products you’ve used on that day. You can go fully naked or go with a swimsuit on your float. If you are using a swimwear, make sure that you would rinse it before and after the floating. Remember, the water got a high salt content that can harden the clothes after wards.

Actually I forgot about that fact that my camera and phone got patches of salt residue after my session. I forgot to clean it up as well right after. The salt can ruin almost any gadgets so beware.

Going into the pod seems like a scene in Black Mirror. I think if you got claustrophobia, you will get a hard time adjusting inside it. But those like me who is not, it would just be fine. At first I got a hard time adjusting on how to do the floating, I am actually afraid that the saltwater might get into my eyes. Inside the pod, you will find two buttons; the red button signals the time through music, while the black is for the lights.

You can do the floating either with lights on or off, I prefer turning it off to really feel the relaxation. My initial 10 or 15 minutes was spent mostly on adjusting my position whether to go on a straight body, hands floating or in my chest. After getting used to it, the feeling of being zoned out begins. There was a moment that I wasn’t even feeling the water. It felt like I was floating in the air, or rather in space. Like if I open or closes my eyes, it was total darkness. I was imagining that if they have put small lights on top of the pod, It would look like I am an astronaut floating in space.

After a few more minutes, I passed out. An hour and a half pass by and I heard a music coming in to my ears. I did fell asleep and I didn’t even realize it. I stand up, took a bath and felt really relax afterwards. It was a good experience and it felt like I did an 8-hour sleep, constricted into an hour.

I think, It was a good decision that I did the floating right after a strenuous activity, making me really feel its capacity to recharge my body. This may have a different result to other people but I personally would love to go back and try it again.
