The Darker the better – Rice the Right Way!

Sunnywood Brown Rice

I feel really incomplete whenever I would be having a meal without rice. I guess, this is cause by being use to it since I was a kid and it is quite hard to let go specially here in the Philippines where rice is a staple.

A lot would say White Rice is bad for our health, but I do believe it isn’t. Research says that the gravity of it could depend on the portion size and on how frequently you consumed it. Of course the best time to eat a bowl of rice is when you are going to be on active mode the whole day.

Rice is a good source of carbohydrates which every body needs daily. But it isn’t just that, in general, rice contains iron, magnesium, Vitamin B and fibre, but the quantities of these vary depending on the type of rice.

There are so many different types of rice in the market, which we can consider better and healthier than our usual whites, and this is all because of the bran.

The bran is the outer layer of the rice kernel, which contains nutrients like protein, fat, and dietary fiber as well as minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and iron. Aside from that, bran also contains antioxidants, which are shown to having as immune-enhancing and cancer-fighting properties.

Thus switching to a more complex rice would truly be beneficial. But of course one would need to get used to on how brown rice and the likes taste.

The Big Switch!

Health definitely became the huge factor in making the switch. Just a few weeks ago, I just found out that my body mass index became 50% worst than my last year and my body fat increase significantly. Im a huge fan of rice meals and I ate rice 2 or three times a day. Not just one cup but two the most at time. I became a bit worried specially that in my age (I am 36 to those who do not know) being cautious about your intakes should already be considered. Add to that, I decided to visit the gym more frequent to support fat loss and gain muscle.

And because, I still cannot take off rice in my daily meal, moving to a better and darker rice I think is the best next thing that I can do. And why is it good?

The better rice: Brown Rice

Brown Rice is more nutritious than white rice. This is because of the bran layer and the germ are still intact giving one more nutrients once eaten. Brown rice is a good source of magnesium, iron and can be a good source of zinc as well. It also contains more fibre compared to white rice. And did you know that Brown Rice may reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer?

Though Brown Rice is a bit expensive compared to White Rice, your intake or Brown Rice would be a little less for its heavier and can get you full quickly.

Other much better Rice Varieties

There are more than 40,000 types of rice in the world, with different sizes and colors. The most famous would be the white rice, but the variety could be diverse; Black, Red, Purple, Brown or even yellow.

Here in the Philippines, Brown Rice, Red Rice and Black Rice are the ones that became a popular alternative to white rice specially if your on the road to fitness. Whenever I go to the market, I always look for the premium quality and high end brand of Rice. I also like it Organic and naturally grown. Good thing there are brands available and can be easily spot in the market. I found this Sunnywood’s Jordan Farm Rice. I love that it is sealed properly, organically grown and they produce different varieties. Of course that includes Organic Brown Rice, Jordan Farm Red Rice, Jordan Farm Black Rice, they also got Basmati Rice which is best for curry dishes and lastly the Violet Rice also known as Jordan Farm Tapol de Oro, which best prepared for native desserts.

If you are looking for a more affordable rice but still high graded go with the brands like Harvester’s or Farmboy. They also got wide varieties to choose from.

Just remember, when taking in carbs like rice, make sure that you are in taking too much to what you needed.
