Shopping the Kotagede Way! A visit at Lulu Lutfi Labibi, Kotagede Silver & Batik Mirota

shopping-in-kotagede

Our last day in Yogyakarta is one of the most pleasurable I could say for the itinerary is very light and concentrate more about shopping. Specially, for me who chooses to pick shopping instead of doing the heritage/cultural exploration.

After having a fancy buffet at Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel, a few of the “wonderers” still have enough time to go for a swim. I was supposed to join but decided to just do a chill moments inside my room.

Off we go to the historical neighbourhood – Kotagede. Taking our bus service, we headed to Omah Duwur Restaurant to do an early lunch. I wasn’t really hungry at all so decided to just taste some of their unique desserts. (Read: 6 must-visit restaurant in Yogyakarta)

After the lunch, we were split in to two; one will do a visit in the Palace, while the rest will do the shopping activity. If you know me very well, for sure you’ll already know what I’ve picked.

From Omah Duwur, we walked the streets of Mondorakan, Kotagede towards Lulu Lutfi Labibi. The street walking was already a fun activity checking how the people in Yogyakarta lives differ from the people here in Manila.

Lulu Lutfi Labibi is a famous fashion designer store in Yogyakarta. Lulu Lutfi Labibi turns traditional Indonesian clothes to something hip and up to date. A visit in his store is something worth to add up in your itinerary on your next visit to Yogyakarta.

We had so much fun not just because of the superb creation of Lulu Lutfi but also to his very instagrammable shop. Add to that was the fun and always game company I’d had!

Silver Kotagede

If you love silver! You will definitely enjoy the silvers in Kotagede.

Kotagede is well known internationally by its silver crafting thus visiting one is really something very interesting. Why? Because they not just do silver crafts for accessorising one but they also create silver handicrafts in other forms. Types of silverware produced by Kotagede are filigrees, silver-casting, sculptures (miniatures), and handmade products (necklaces, rings).

According to history, the products of this region were to fulfill the need of household and ceremonial equipment for the royal family (Kotagede is also the place where you can find the Palace). During the colonial period of the 1930s, silverworks and silver handicrafts prospered in Kotagede.

And guess what! They even have Silver Mosque or called Masjid Perak constructed in 1940 that you can find on the major streets of Kotagede.

Batik Mirota

Now this is truly a shopping venue for thrifty buyers! We head straight to the market to visit Batik Mirota. Here you can find different batik creations plus lots of scarfs, local food and souvenir items.

I was looking for something to buy for friends in the Philippines and found a very affordable scarf that only costs 20,000 rupiah which is approximately around Php 74 each. So we grab 6-8 pieces of it.

I was also thinking of buying other interesting stuff but didn’t know that most of it was located on the second floor (look at the photos below! Giving this as surprise gifts could be fun!). So, 10 minutes before our departure, I ran up and buy lots of stickers, key chains and accessories.

It was too bad that I didn’t have enough time to explore the second floor, for there are a lot of super interesting things I wanted to get. The whole process of converting, saving and picking the best items makes me realise that an hour of shopping here in Batik Mirota is really not enough.

Nevertheless, I ended the day with a happy face, enjoying not just the shopping but also the company I’ve been with in our last day here in Yogyakarta.

Coming up! When in Bali!
